Don’t Be Deceived AI & Zen Practice

Recently, deep fake AI Dharma talks mimicking Zen Master Seung Sahn have appeared online. On a practical level, we are exploring countermeasures such as hiring a lawyer, but we must ultimately view this through the Buddhist teaching of cause and effect. We gain immense benefits from advanced technology, and naturally, we must deal with its inevitable side effects.
AI was invented by humans in a modern world deeply influenced by dualistic Western philosophy that failed to transcend the ‘self of dualism’. However, as Zen Master Seung Sahn taught, the ultimate responsibility falls on us; as practitioners, we have not practiced hard enough to inspire the world with the non-dualistic “before thinking” mind
Therefore, navigating the age of AI requires returning to our own practice. Just as certain Kong-ans demand absolute clarity so that you are not deceived, we must cultivate a highly clear mind to face this smart technology. Ultimately, these AI challenges are simply the “before thinking” substance manifesting into new forms, reminding us that dealing with AI is, in itself, our practice.
