During practice, there are times we ask ourselves, ‘What am I doing here?’ and feel like we’ve lost our way. But if you keep a beginner’s mind, that feeling of being lost turns right into a pure question, which connects directly to ‘don’t know.’
A long time ago, Zen Master Seokdu (Stonehead) misheard his teacher saying ‘Jiksimsibul’ (Mind itself is Buddha) as ‘Jipsinsibul’ (Straw sandal is Buddha). He held onto this big question: ‘How can a lowly straw sandal be Buddha?’ and eventually attained enlightenment.
At any moment, if you just sit with the question, ‘What is this?’, it turns into true practice—your very own experience.
