Every Day, Stop
Zen Master Dae Bong
Every day we say “I.” “I think this, I want this, I like this.” Even when it’s for others, we say “I.” “I just want you to be happy!” What kind of “I” is that? Buddha’s life and teaching means everyday stop. Even five minutes or ten minutes, sit down, anyplace. Sit on the floor, sit in a chair, sit outside, sit on the bus or subway. Put away your phone and look back at yourself. Look inside, “I always have some thinking about ‘I.’ What am I?” This is Buddha’s practice. Buddha’s teaching is how to find our true nature, how to find true peace and happiness that is independent of any situation, even independent of life and death. This is how we get compassion and wisdom to live well in this world.
