Dhyana

Sixth Patriarch

In our school, meditation means not dwelling on the mind nor upon purity. Also, we do not approve of non-activity. The mind is primarily delusive; when we realize that it is only an illusion then there is no need to dwell upon it. Our nature is also intrinsically pure, why dwell on it? If we get rid of all delusive ideas there will be nothing but purity that is our nature. It is delusive ideas that obscure Tathata(Suchness). If we dwell upon purity we are only creating another delusion, the delusion of purity. Since delusion has no abiding place, it is delusive to dwell upon it. Purity has neither shape nor form; but some people go so far as to invent the ‘Form of Purity’ and treat it as a problem for solution. By holding such opinions people become purity-ridden and thereby obscure their True Nature.
