On Keeping the Bodhi Mind<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You must first make a firm decision to attain Enlightenment and help others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You already have the five or ten precepts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Know when to keep them and when to break them, when they are open and when they are closed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let go of your small self and become your true self.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In original nature<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There is no this and that.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Great Ground Mirror<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Has no likes or dislikes.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>2. On Mindfulness<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not cling to your opinions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not discuss your private views with others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">To cling to and defend your opinions is to destroy your practice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Put away all your opinions. This is true Buddhism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not go where you have no business.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not listen to talk which does not concern you.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not make the bad karma of desire, anger, or ignorance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If in this lifetime<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You do not open your mind,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You cannot digest<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Even one drop of water.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>3. On Conduct<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Always act with others. Do not put yourself above others by acting differently.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Arrogance is not permitted in the temple.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Money and sex are like a spiteful snake.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Put your concern with them far away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the Dharma Room always walk behind those seated in meditation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">At talks and ceremonies, keep the proper posture and dress.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not talk or laugh loudly in the Dharma Room.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you have business outside the temple which causes you to miss ceremonies or meals,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">notify one of the temple officials before you leave.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Respect those older than you. Love those younger than you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Keep your mind large and open.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you meet sick people, love and help them. Be hospitable to guests.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Make them welcome and attend to their needs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When respected people visit the temple, bow to them and speak considerately to them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Be courteous. Always let others go before you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Help other people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not play games with other people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not gossip.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not use other people&#8217;s shoes and coats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not cling to the scriptures.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not oversleep.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not be frivolous.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Let older and more respected people be seated before you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not discuss petty temple matters with guests.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When visiting outside the temple, speak well of the temple to others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Drinking to produce heedlessness, or acting out of lust will only make bad karma and destroy your practice. You must be strong and think correctly. Then these desires cannot tempt you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not delude yourself into thinking you are a great and free person. This is not true Buddhism.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Attend only to yourself. Do not judge the actions of others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not make the bad karma of killing, stealing, or of lust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Originally there is nothing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">But Buddha practiced unmoving under the Bodhi tree for six years.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">And for nine years Bodhidharma sat silently in Sorim.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you can break the wall of your self<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You will become infinite in time and space.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>4. On Speech<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Your evil tongue will lead you to ruin. You must keep the stopper in the bottle.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Only open it when necessary.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Always speak well, in the manner of a Bodhisattva. Do not use vulgar language in the temple.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you come upon two people fighting, do not provoke them by angry speech.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Rather use good words to soothe their anger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not make the bad karma of lying, exaggerating, making trouble between people, or cursing others.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Once a man spoke incorrectly and was reborn a fox for 500 generations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">After he heard the correct speech, he lost his fox&#8217;s body.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">What is correct and incorrect speech?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you open your mouth, I will hit you thirty times.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you close your mouth, I will still hit your thirty times.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">You must grab the word-head (kong-an) and not let go.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The dog is barking. Wong, wong, wong!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The cat is meowing. Meow, meow, meow.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>5. On Eating<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">An eminent teacher said, &#8220;A day without work is a day without eating.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">There are two kinds of work: inside work and outside work. Inside work is keeping clear mind. Outside work is cutting off selfish desires and helping others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">First work, then eat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Eat in silence. Do not make unnecessary noise.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">While eating, attend only to yourself. Do not be concerned with the actions of others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Accept what is served with gratitude. Do not cling to your likes and dislikes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not seek satisfaction in eating. Eat only to support yourself in your practice.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Though you may eat good food all your life, your body will die.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The Great Way is not difficult.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Simply cut off all thought of good and bad.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Salt is salty,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Sugar is sweet.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>6. On Formal Practice<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During formal practice act with other people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not be lazy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During chanting, follow the moktak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">During sitting, follow the chugpi.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Perceive the true meaning of chanting and sitting and act accordingly.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Understand that you have accumulated bad karma which is like a big mountain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Keep this in mind as you bow in repentance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Our karma has no self-nature, but is created by our mind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If our mind is extinguished, our karma will be extinguished.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When we see both as empty, this is true repentance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">We bow to see true nature and help others.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Shouting into a valley<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Big shout: big echo.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Small shout: small echo.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><b>7. On the Dharma Talk<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">When you listen to the words of the Zen teacher, keep your mind clear.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not be attached to the words. Cut off all thought and pierce the true meaning.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Do not think, &#8220;I already have great understanding; I have no use for this speech.&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">This is delusion.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you have a question, put it to the Zen teacher after the dharma talk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If a snake drinks water, the water becomes venom. If a cow drinks water, the water becomes milk. If you cling to ignorance, you create life and death. If you keep clear, you become Buddha.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">In the great work of life and death, time will not wait for you.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">If you die tomorrow, what kind of body will you get?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Is not all of this of great importance?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Hurry up! Hurry!<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Blue sky and green sea<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Are the Buddha&#8217;s original face.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p7\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The sound of the waterfall and the bird&#8217;s song<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Are the great sutras.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Where are you going?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Watch your step.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Water flows down to the sea.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Clouds float up to the heavens.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]1.
