진정한 인간이란 무엇인가? 숭산선사

우리는 이 세상에 빈손으로 왔습니다. 이 세상에서 우리는 무엇을 해야 할까요? 왜 이 세상에 왔습니까? 이 몸은 공합니다. 이 몸을 끌고 다니는 그것은 무엇입니까? 어디에서 왔습니까? 이것을 알아내야만 합니다, 그 답을 찾아내야 합니다. 그리고 그 답을 알고 싶다면 스스로에게 "나는 무엇인가?"라고 물어야 합니다. 이 큰 질문을 항상 간직하십시오. 모든 생각이 사라져야 합니다. 일어나는 모든 생각을 붙들지 말고 끊어내야 합니다. 그러면 우리의 참자아가 나타나고, 진정한 마음이 나타납니다.

정말로 수행을 원하는 사람이 이 세상에 얼마나 될까요? 많은 사람들이 수행은 전혀 하지 않고, 하루 종일 그리고 밤낮으로 욕망과 분노, 무지를 키웁니다. 이 몸을 잃어버리면 가지고 갈 수 있는 것은 아무 것도 없습니다. 정말로 수행을 원하는 사람이 이 세상에 얼마나 될까요? 많은 사람들이 수행은 전혀 하지 않고, 하루 종일 그리고 밤낮으로 욕망과 분노, 무지를 키웁니다. 이 몸을 잃어버리면 가지고 갈 수 있는 것은 아무 것도 없습니다.

이 몸이 사라지면 무엇을 가져갈 것이가요? 당신은 무엇을 할 것인가요? 어디로 가실 건가요? 모르시죠, 그렇죠? 이 "모른다"가 분명하면 당신의 마음이 맑고 분명라여 당신이 갈 곳도 분명합니다. 그러면 자신의 직업을 이해하고 자신이 이 세상에 태어난 이유를 이해하게 됩니다. 그러면 이 세상에서 자신이 하는 일을 이해하게 됩니다. 그것을 깨달을 때 인간이 될 수 있습니다.

We come into this world empty-handed. What do we do in this world? Why did we come into this world? This body is an empty thing. What is the one thing that carries this body around? Where did it come from? You must understand that, you must find that. So, if you want to find that, you have to ask yourself, “What am I?” Always keep this big question. Thinking has to disappear. We have to take away all our thinking, cut off our thinking. Then our true self appears, then our true mind appears.

In this world, how many people really want practice? Many people don’t practice at all, fight day and night, and all day exercise their desire, their anger, their ignorance. When you lose this body, then you have nothing you can take with you. When this body disappears, what will you take with you? What will you do? Where will you go? You don’t know, right? If this “don’t know” is clear, then your mind is clear, then also the place you go is clear. Then you understand your job, you understand why you were born into this world. Then you understand what you do in this world. When you understand that, then you can become a human being.

분노와 함께 수행하기 대봉선사

오늘은 분노와 함께 수행하는 것에 대하여 이야기해보도록 하겠습니다.
우선, 분노는 어디로부터 오는 것일까요?
예전에 제가 한 번 숭산 대선사님께 “ 분노는 어디에서 오는 것입니까?”라고 여쭤보았습니다.
대선사님께서는 “점검하는 마음에서 온다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.
그래서 제가 한 번 더 “점검하는 마음은 어디에서 오는 것입니까?”라고 여쭤보았습니다.
대선사님은 “네 자신을 완전히 믿지 않는 데서 온다.”라고 말씀하셨습니다.
저는 “제 자신을 완전히 믿지 않는 것은 어디에서 오는 것입니까?”라고 여쭤보았습니다.
대선사님께서는 “오직 할 뿐!”이라고 대답하셨습니다.

우리가 올바른 상황, 역할, 그리고 관계를 제대로 지킬 수 없거나 그러지 않을 때, 우리는 우리 본래 자신을 믿지 않는 것입니다. 우리가 우리의 본래 자신을 믿지 않을 때, 우리는 점검하기를 시작합니다. 즉, 우리 스스로를 점검하고 다른 이들을 점검합니다. 그리고 나서 우리가 보는 것이 우리의 의견과 다를 경우, 화를 내기 시작합니다.

이처럼 분노는 우리의 올바른 상황, 올바른 역할, 그리고 올바른 관계를 지키지 않는 데에서 나타나는 '점검하는 마음'에서 비롯됩니다.

또다른 접근법으로 분노를 “기운이 올라간 것(energy up)”으로 볼 수도 있습니다. 제가 공포나 불안, 각종 감정이나 의견들을 내는 것에 대해서 말씀드린 바처럼, 여러분의 느낌을 알아차리고 기운을 아래로 내릴 수 있는 명상을 하도록 하십시오. 만일 여러분의 기운이 몸 안에서 위로 올라가 있고, 그 중심이 높이 올라가 마침내 꺾여버린다면, 원래 상태로 회복되기가 매우 어렵습니다. 그러나 여러분 기운의 중심이 아랫배 부근의 “단전”쪽으로 낮게 있다면, 설령 그 기운이 꺾여버린다고 해도, 매우 쉽게 원래 자리로 되돌아올 수 있습니다. 그리고 여러분이 큰 의문과 '오직 모를 뿐'의 마음을 유지한다면, 일어나는 모든 일들을 잘 소화할 수 있을 것입니다.

그러니 맨 먼저, 여러분 자신이 여러분의 느낌을 느낄 수 있도록 허용하고, 여러분의 느낌을 알아차리십시오. 그러나 여러분의 방향을 잃어버리지 않도록 하십시오. 그리고 들숨과 날숨을 알아차리십시오. 내쉬는 숨을 들이쉬는 숨보다 두 배 길게 하도록 하십시오. 여러분의 기운의 중심이 위로 올라가 있음을 알아차리십시오. 설령 여러분의 분노가 정당하고, 여러분의 의견이 옳다고 해도, 그것은 단지 '상대적인 생각(opposite thinking)'일 뿐임을 자각하십시오. 그러한 생각은 지혜나 도움이 되는 말과 행동으로 우리를 이끌어주지 못합니다. 느낌은 맞거나 틀린 것이 아닙니다. 만일 여러분이 여러분의 느낌이나 의견에 집착한다면, 지혜는 나타나지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 여러분이 어떠한 느낌이나 감정, 의견의 좋고 나쁨, 긍정적이거나 부정적인 것에 상관없이 그저 그것 자체를 완전히 소화시킨다면, 그 모든 것들은 지혜가 될 것입니다. 소화를 시키지 못한다면, 아무리 좋은 감정이거나 “옳은” 의견이라고 해도 바로 그것이 여러분을 지옥으로 이끌 것입니다.

여러분의 경험을 알아차리고, 분노는 단지 무언가가 여러분의 의견에 반하는 것임을 자각하십시오. 설령 여러분이 옳다고 해도, 만약 여러분이 그것에 집착하고 있다면, 바로 그 집착이 여러분을 조종할 뿐만 아니라 여러분 자신과 그 상황 자체에 유익한 말이나 행동으로 이어지지 못하도록 합니다.

숭산 대선사님께서는 종종 “분노가 일어나면, 곧 어리석은 행동이 나타난다”고 말씀하셨습니다. 이는 곧 여러분이 원하지 않은 결과를 여러분이 자초할 수 있다는 뜻이기도 합니다.

여러분, 여러분의 호흡을 알아차리고, 모든 집착들을 흘려보내면서 여러분의 기운을 아래로 내리십시오. 그리고 '오직 모를 뿐'의 마음을 유지하십시오. 이를 반복하다보면, 여러분은 어떠한 상황에서도 여러분의 분노와 의견을 잘 소화시킬 수 있을 것입니다. 그러면 그 상황 자체를 훨씬 더 유익하고 만족스러운 방식으로 이끌 수 있을 것입니다. 분노가 스스로 변형되어 나갈 때, 그것은 마치 마법과도 같을 것입니다.

그러므로, 오직 시도하십시오!

Practicing with Anger by Zen Master Dae Bong

First, where does anger come from?
When we are not able to or we don’t keep correct situation, function and relationship, we do not believe in our true self. When we do not believe in our true self, we start checking. We check ourselves and check others. Then if what we see is different from our opinion, we get angry.

So anger comes from checking which comes from not keeping our correct situation, correct function and correct relationship.

So first, allow yourself to feel your feeling, be aware of your feeling. But don’t lose your direction. Then be aware of breathing in and breathing out. Make your exhale about twice as long as your inhale. Realize that your center energy is up. Even though you believe in the correctness of your anger, the righteousness of your opinion, realize it is opposites’ thinking. It won’t lead to wisdom and beneficial speech or action. Feelings are not right or wrong, but if you attach to your feeling or opinion, wisdom won’t appear. However, if you digest any feeling, any emotion, any opinion whether good or bad, positive or negative will lead to wisdom. If you don’t digest it, even good emotions or “correct” opinions will lead you to hell.
So, be aware of your experience and realize that anger means something is going against your opinion. Even if you’re correct, if you are attached to it, it is controlling you and it will not lead to action or speech that helps you or the situation.

Zen Master Seung Sahn often said, “Anger appear, then soon stupid action appear” which means you’ll bring a result which is not what you want.
So, bring your energy down through awareness of breath, letting go of attachments, keep a don’t know mind and as you do that, you’ll be able to digest your anger and your opinion, in any situation, and then handle the situation in a much more beneficial and satisfying manner. It’s like magic when it transforms itself.
So, just Try!
