Bai Zhang Huai Hai

by Baizhang Huaihai (百丈懷海)

Baizhang Huaihai (百丈懷海) was a prominent Zen master during the Tang Dynasty (720-814 AD) in China. As a disciple of Mazu Daoyi, he played a significant role in shaping Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Baizhang is best known for creating the “Pure Rules of Baizhang,” which established monastic guidelines emphasizing discipline and work (where our Temple Rules based on). His famous saying, “A day without work is a day without food,” reflects his belief in the importance of labor and self-sufficiency. Baizhang’s teachings and practices have had a lasting influence on Zen Buddhism, and his legacy continues through his disciples, such as Huangbo and Linji.
